Keeping Tampa Bay’s Water Blue by being Green
I want to introduce you to a wonderful 501(c)(3) eco-friendly non-profit we are members of here in the Tierra Verde, Florida – Tampa Bay Watch
They are located at: Tampa Bay Watch, 3000 Pinellas Bayway South, Tierra Verde, FL 33715
Tampa Bay Watch is very active in a variety of programs and education to make a real difference by helping to Conserve and Restore Tampa Bay.
They are working to restore the Bay everyday through:
- Building Oyster Domes;
- Oyster Reef Enhancement Programs;
- Salt Marsh Planting Program;
- Sea Grass Planting Program;
- Coastal Clean Up Program;
- Mono-filament Program;
- Great Bay Scallop Search;
- Invasive Plant Removal
They do a great job of helping Tampa Bay’s waters stay blue (through their green efforts).
They organized 13 years ago when the waters of Tampa Bay were facing serious environmental challenges that threatened our extensive eco-system which supports 70% of the local fish, shell fish and more wildlife at some point in their life.
Did you know that Tampa Bay (the body of water) is the largest estuary in the state of Florida?
-
It is and it is made up of “400 square miles of open water and 2,300 square miles of highly developed watershed that supports industry, agriculture, and a diverse population in excess of 2.4 million people.” – Source: TampaBayWatch.org
Tampa Bay Watch’ s purpose is the protecting and restoring Tampa Bay’s estuary, as well as, restoring the marine and wetlands environments. They focus on the delicate ecosystem that exists in the waters of Tampa Bay.
History of Cunningham Key Home to Tampa Bay Watch
From Tampa Bay Watch’s website I learned about their history and their current location – a waterfront piece of property to die for at the southern most point of Tierra Verde. In the 1960s the Department of Transportation dredged Tampa bay and this piece of land known as Cunningham Key became part of the causeway connecting Tierra Verde to Ft. De Soto park.
In 2000 Pinellas County and the State of Florida Greenways Program worked together to purchase the Cunningham Key property to be the headquarters for Tampa Bay Watch’s environmental protection and restoration programs.
All in a Green Days Work – Caring Volunteers Make a Difference:
On a recent Saturday morning the Tampa Bay Watch volunteers hit Fort Desoto beach and the surrounding mangrove areas to do a Coastal Clean Up. Look at the results in the picture to the left.
Being a frequent visitor to the beach I was amazed at just how much trash was collected – just imagine what our beaches would be like if this wasn’t done periodically.
As a Cleawater house with 2 cub scouts we always try to leave Tampa Bay beaches places better than we found them, this is the crux of what Tampa Bay Watch does everyday in so many ways.
Below is a video with a Tampa Bay Watch intern, Jessica, kind enough to share more about www.TampaBayWatch.org.
You can support their efforts, Join Tampa Bay Watch and become a member for as little as $25 a year.

Sand Key Florida | Eco Friendly and Home to Nature and Nature Lovers
October 13th, 2007 Categories: Clearwater Beach Florida, Green Living, Sand Key Florida, Tampa Beach Living, Waterfront Living
Sand Key Florida 33767
Sand Key is Home to Finest Luxury Oceanfront Condos, home to Beach Wildlife and home to some of the Finest Beaches in the US - it’s up to all of us to work together to sustain and protect all of them for the future.
Did you know that the Sand Key Sand Dunes play a vital role in protecting our Pinellas County Florida Beaches from erosion each year?
Sand Key Sand Dunes are important for 3 main reasons:
They protect waterfront Clearwater homes and businesses and are the first line of defense against storms. They acts as a buffer protecting both property and natural habitats.- They Enhance the Quality of our Life - they are attractive and promote wildlife. Tourism accounts for over $15 Billion a year towards our states economy so good beaches is good for all of us.
- They provide a home and habitat for many beach plants and animals.
Sand Key is also part of the Great Florida Bird Trail.
Sand Key Beach is also Home to several Endangered Turtle Nests
In addition, each year from May to October Sand Key and Clearwater Beach is home to several endangered turtle nests.
We saw 2 marked off nests on Sand Key today. It’s important to know not to disturb them. It’s also Illegal to disturb them as seen by the warning sign shown here.
Please do not have lights shining at night anywhere near these nests because turtles instinctively follow the light - which was always “the moon” (prior to beach development) back into the ocean when they hatch, however, we have lost thousands of endangered turtles because now they will follow the lights from signs, patios and the likes into our roadways and away from the ocean -
Please help protect our Endangered Sea Turtles.

Clearwater Beach Florida | Earns Blue Wave Designation for EcoFriendly Clean Beaches
October 11th, 2007 Categories: Clearwater Beach Florida, Green Living, Parks and Recreration, Pinellas County, Tampa Beach Living, Things to do, Waterfront Living
Clearwater Beach Florida | Protecting our Top Beaches
Clean Beaches Council is a not-for-profit organization that has been around since 1998 pioneering America’s first environmental certification program for our beach - the Blue Wave Campaign.
The Blue Wave Campaign’s goal is to promote public awareness and a community partnership that involves a voluntary pledge and voluntary participation towards taking care of our beach along with responsible beach management.
In Tampa Bay Florida and especially on Clearwater Beach, tourism is our major industry and plays a vital role to our local economy. We’re not alone, the Clean Beaches Council explains that our United States beaches and coastal areas “offer unique recreation, support maritime commerce and provide jobs for coastal communities. In fact, beach tourism contributes over $640 billion annually to the US Economy (85% of all tourist revenue)”
In the last 10 years there have been over 20,000 health advisories issued relating to water quality in the United States and here in the Tampa Bay area we are only too familiar with the additional impacts of storms and new construction on Pinellas County beach erosion. Every year miles of beaches are lost to beach erosion.
We’ve loved living on our beautiful Pinellas Gulf beaches and we’ve also seen many changes over the last 18 years. With more properties on the beaches and more people visiting our beaches it takes even more effort to ensure that we embrace “low impact” living and work to ensure sustainable beaches.
I believe now is the time to commit to working together: Pinellas County government + Our Beach Communities + National Parks + Residents + Tourist to preserve our local economy and more importantly for our kids - YOU and the Blue Wave Campaign can help! In other articles we detailed the:
- Info on the Pinellas Beaches that earned the Blue Wave Designation;
